Dec 05, 2024 · Sarah WhelanMy review doesn't apply to the clinic as a whole which I don't have experience of but only one veterinarian, -- Dr. Rao. My experience would suggest that anyone who gets an extremely serious diagnoses from Dr Rao get a second opinion, especially if she immediately suggests euthanasia. I took my cat to see her because he'd had constipation for a couple days. Otherwise very active, strong and eating well. I was told after an x-ray that he had a "mass" so big and hard in his colon that euthanasia was recommended. Even though Dr Rao couldn't actually see the mass, her mere palpating of it convinced her of this. She said they couldn't definitely diagnose as cancer because of lack of equipment. She then worded a possible referral in a way that actually from my standpoint, discouraged me doing so, telling me they could give me names BUT even if the mass wasn't cancer it was so big and attached that a large part of his colon would need to be removed. I would never do this to the type of cat I have. Stunned I said I needed time to think, during which I texted a couple friends knowledgeable about cat health and both said absolutely get a second opinion. I told her I was going to take him home and was warned he could die a painful death if the 'mass" ruptured or from other complications. She suggested a follow up appointment for euthanasia Friday. This review would be too long to go through all the steps after that, but one of my knowledgeable friends suggested from x-rays it could be hardened fecal balls . Because my cat can be very difficult to catch ( I mean inside,,), it took me a few days to get him again to get him to a specialty vet. I asked Dr Rao about the potential for fecal balls being the mass and was told that wasn't it. By the time I got him to the specialist, he had actually passed three very large hard pieces of stool. I didn't know these were fecal balls, but after extensive testing at the specialty clinic, including more clear X-rays and an ultrasound, the ''mass" that was supposedly attached to his colon in a way that the colon would in large part need to be removed had actually completely disappeared -- because it HAD BEEN those fecal balls he passed himself. The specialty vet suggested keeping him on stool softeners which resolved the problem and has since this occurred in the spring. I actually filed a disciplinary complaint+- anyone can misdiagnose but that with the push to euthanize and telling me the mass wasn't fecal matter when I raised it, felt concerning to me. As soon as Dr Rao lawyered up I knew there was little chance I'd get anywhere. I've worked with disciplinary boards and the legal system and know they are deferential to those with lawyers. I could not afford one. The complaint was dismissed. I felt if I couldn't help that way, at least a review may help consumers even if only one reference point.I have only this one experience ,and Dr Rao may be a wonderful veterinarian overall, but I know how much I appreciate reviews, be it Amazon or a doctors. They give consumers one more reference point. One thing I would also suggest to people is that if you ever feel that your pet or even yourself with a doctor has acted in a way that felt not best practice to you, consider filing a complaint. Many people fear to or don't have the time. But if a board starts to see more complaints against a particular practitioner, it may have an effect. I have never had any other interaction with Dr Rao to affect my review -- I paid my bill and never asked for a refund or ever contacted the clinic again. Jan 19, 2025 · Amy ModglinBig Bear Vet Clinic saw my sweet hound in an emergency situation even though I'm not a regular client, and I am so very appreciative. Dr. Lawlor and her staff were caring and knowledgeable and addressed every concern I had. I couldnt ask for better care for my dog.

Although I wasn’t there in person, my mom called to share how empathetic and gentle the doctor and technician were when they helped her say goodbye to her beloved dog at home. What really touched her was the comfort they offered after the procedure. As they were leaving, both the doctor and technician hugged her, and the technician said, “That was the last kind thing you could do for your dog.” That simple, heartfelt sentiment helped her process the loss and has stayed with her since. Thank you to this incredible team for your kindness and support during such an emotional moment. It meant the world to us.
