Services

Banfield Pet Hospital offers a robust and comprehensive suite of veterinary services, focusing heavily on preventive care to promote long-term health and wellness. Their services are designed to cover various aspects of pet health, from routine check-ups to more complex medical and surgical procedures:

  • Preventive Care: This is a cornerstone of Banfield's philosophy, encompassing thorough physical examinations (often two per year with wellness plans), vaccinations tailored to the pet's lifestyle and risk factors (including rabies, DHLPP, Lyme, Bordetella for dogs, and FVRCP, Feline Leukemia for cats), and comprehensive parasite control strategies for both internal and external parasites.

  • Diagnostic Services: The hospital is equipped with in-house laboratory diagnostics for rapid results, including blood work (CBC, chemistry panels), urinalysis, fecal exams, heartworm/Lyme testing, and FeLV/FIV testing. They also utilize digital radiography (X-rays) to assess various body systems, from cardiopulmonary to musculoskeletal, aiding in the diagnosis of illnesses and injuries. Dental digital X-rays are also available for thorough oral health assessments.

  • Medical Treatment & Illness Management: Banfield provides diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions, including gastrointestinal illnesses, skin and coat issues, and management of chronic conditions such as hyperthyroidism, as exemplified by the detailed customer review. They also offer prescription medications and dietary advice.

  • Surgical Services: General surgical procedures are offered, including routine spays and neuters. The hospital also performs various soft tissue surgeries, such as mass removals, and can handle complex cases. Anesthesia monitoring is a standard part of surgical care.

  • Dental Care: Professional dental cleanings are provided to support oral health, often including dental extractions and other oral surgery procedures as needed. The emphasis on dental care highlights its importance for a pet's overall well-being.

  • Microchipping: To ensure pets can be reunited with their owners if lost, microchipping services are available.

  • Nutritional Counseling: Veterinarians and staff provide advice on balanced diets suitable for a pet's life stage, lifestyle, and specific health conditions, including veterinary therapeutic diets.

  • Behavioral Counseling: The team offers guidance to help decode pet behavior and address potential medical causes, providing resources to help manage behavioral issues.

  • End-of-Life Services: While not detailed in the provided review, Banfield offers compassionate end-of-life care, supporting pet owners through difficult decisions.

Features

Banfield Pet Hospital at Pittsburgh Mills stands out due to several distinctive features:

  • Optimum Wellness Plans® (OWP): This is a signature feature of Banfield. OWPs are year-long preventive pet care packages that bundle services like unlimited office visits, comprehensive exams, routine vaccinations, and diagnostic testing for an affordable monthly or annual fee. These plans are designed to make high-quality preventive care accessible and budget-friendly, often offering significant savings compared to individual service prices. There are various OWP options tailored for puppies, kittens, adult dogs, and cats, and even special care plans for pets with chronic conditions.

  • 24/7 Vet Chat™: A key benefit of the OWP, this feature provides pet owners with round-the-clock access to veterinary professionals for advice and peace of mind, allowing for immediate guidance on pet health concerns from the comfort of home.

  • Virtual Visits: OWPs also include virtual visits with the local Banfield veterinary team, offering a convenient way to consult with a vet without an in-person trip.

  • Nationwide Network: As part of a vast network with over 1,000 locations, an OWP is valid at any Banfield Pet Hospital nationwide. This provides immense convenience for pet owners who travel or relocate, ensuring continuous care and easy access to their pet's medical records.

  • High Standard of Care: The professional and knowledgeable staff, including highly skilled veterinarians and certified veterinary technicians, are committed to delivering top-notch care. The ability to handle complex cases and provide thorough diagnostic work-ups, even when busy, speaks to their competence.

  • Client-Centric Approach: The readiness to "graciously squeeze in" urgent cases, the gentle handling of anxious pets, and the clear communication from staff (as seen with Dr. Moffitt explaining conditions and meds) demonstrate a strong commitment to client and patient satisfaction.

Promotional Information

The core of Banfield Pet Hospital's promotional strategy revolves around its Optimum Wellness Plans® (OWPs). These plans are actively promoted as an affordable and smart way to ensure consistent, high-quality preventive care for pets, offering significant savings compared to paying for services individually. The convenience of unlimited office visits, 24/7 Vet Chat™, and virtual visits are strong selling points. The ability to budget for pet healthcare through monthly payments with no interest fees also makes veterinary care more accessible. Furthermore, the national validity of OWPs is a major promotional advantage, appealing to pet owners who seek consistent care regardless of their location.

Testimonials from satisfied customers, like the one highlighting the "superior" care team and the decision to "keep going forever," serve as powerful word-of-mouth promotion. Banfield also leverages its physical presence within PetSmart stores, offering a convenient "one-stop shop" for pet owners to combine veterinary visits with purchasing pet supplies. While specific short-term promotions might vary, the consistent messaging focuses on the value, convenience, and comprehensive nature of their preventive care offerings, encouraging pet owners to enroll in an OWP for their pet's long-term health and happiness.

My cat got out and was lost for 10 days before we managed to trap him. When we got him back he was very skinny and I knew he needed to be looked at ASAP. Even my own clinic couldn't fit him in, but this Banfield, though busy already, graciously squeezed us in. It was a long drive from home, but worth it. We were there about 2.5hrs and they had to take him in the back a few times for everything but did blood work, pulled multiple ticks off him (some very tiny and he is very fluffy-unfortunately he wasn't wearing his seresto collar when he got outside), cleaned his ears, gave him SQ fluids to help rehydrate him, updated his rabies vaccine (I couldn't remember the date of his last one, so better safe than sorry!), caught the beginning of a URI and got meds for that, gave him some Rx urinary food he's usually on to keep him happy, poor little skeleton, AND, through his blood work, realized he is hyperthyroid... but just very early in the disease because he hasn't even been showing symptoms at home yet. So we got a Rx for compounded meds to start him on and a plan moving forward. I completely forgot at the time, and the vet didn't mention the option of radiation therapy for hyperthyroidism (look up Radiocat), so I was a little annoyed getting home and realizing that hadn't been mentioned. But Dr Moffitt knew I am a vet tech and so probably knew I am aware of that treatment and was just getting me the medication to hold us over while we figured things out. It was a lot of stuff going on, after all. Sabrina was the tech assisting Dr Moffitt with our case and she, along with everyone else who cared for Francis Bernard, our kitty, was very gentle and calm with him. Exactly what he needed as he grew up feral and is still jumpy, even without having spent 10 days outside hiding who knows where. I think the receptionist was Britt, and she was also very helpful and kind. I also saw a former coworker, Kirsten, a fellow Certified Veterinary Technician, who transferred to this location, and was very happy to see her because I knew if she was working on my cat at all in the back, he'd be getting great care. We're very appreciative of everything everyone did for our baby, even though they were so busy already. 🙏 Pic at home, two at the doctor's (husband was able to calm him the best in between treatments), and finally back home on the couch where he belongs!

Staff and vet were great. Took time to answer all of my questions and went through all treatment options and prices for my dog

We have been taking our pets here for over 10 yrs. Dr. Moffett is the best! Prices can be high and they seem to like to push certain things. I just politely decline and they don't usually ask again.

We rescued a stray from the street and brought her here to be checked out. We were told she had no fleas, and two days later we discovered that she did. I called, during business hours and no one answered the phone. I left a detailed message asking what we should do about the fleas, and no one called me back or provided any help. They generally don’t seem to care about your pets welfare and just want to make money off of you. We will be moving to a new vet.
