I was charged $89.95 for a vaccine appointment plus $37.24 for the Kennel Cough vaccine just so my dog can get a vaccine to board at a kennel. Previously, you simply were charged for a tech fee when your pup needed a vaccine (and not any doctor care), but now you are charged for the doctor fee. Please change this policy! Also, Banfield is not using Paw Safe salt on the ramps/stairs to their clinics. They are using regular salt. This should be a given, Banfield! Please switch to Paw Safe!

The environment at Banfield Pet Hospital, as part of a national chain, typically adheres to a consistent design and operational standard across its locations. This usually means a clean, organized, and professionally managed clinic space. While specific details about the Medfield location's interior are not provided in the reviews, the overall expectation is a welcoming reception area, well-equipped examination rooms, and dedicated spaces for diagnostics and treatments. However, one notable concern raised by a customer points to an environmental aspect: "Banfield is not using Paw Safe salt on the ramps/stairs to their clinics. They are using regular salt." This highlights a potential area for improvement in ensuring the external environment is entirely pet-friendly, especially during winter months, to prevent paw irritation. Despite this, the presence of highly-regarded professionals like "Dr Kirk" suggests that within the clinic, the atmosphere created by the veterinary team is one of calmness and patience, which can significantly alleviate stress for nervous pets and their owners. This focus on a calming presence contributes to a more positive experience for the animals being treated.

As a widely recognized "Pet Hospital" brand, Banfield Pet Hospital offers a comprehensive suite of services designed to cover the routine and preventive healthcare needs of pets. These services typically include:

  • Routine Preventive Care: This is a core offering, encompassing annual wellness exams, vaccinations (e.g., Kennel Cough vaccine), parasite control (flea, tick, heartworm prevention), and microchipping.
  • Optimum Wellness Plans (OWP): Banfield is well-known for its subscription-based wellness plans, which bundle preventive care services, including unlimited office visits, vaccinations, and certain diagnostic tests, for a monthly fee. While not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews for this location, it is a standard offering across Banfield hospitals.
  • Diagnostic Services: Including in-house laboratory testing (blood work, urinalysis, fecal analysis) and diagnostic imaging (X-rays) to aid in the accurate diagnosis of various health conditions.
  • Dental Care: Comprehensive dental services, including cleanings, extractions, and addressing other oral health concerns.
  • Surgical Procedures: The hospital typically provides common surgical procedures, such as spaying and neutering, and minor soft tissue surgeries.
  • Pain Management: Strategies and medications to manage pain in pets, particularly after surgery or due to chronic conditions.
  • Nutritional Counseling: Guidance on appropriate diets and feeding plans to support a pet's health at different life stages or for specific medical conditions.
  • Behavioral Consultations: Advice and support for addressing common behavioral issues in pets.

One customer review highlights a specific service pricing concern: "I was charged $89.95 for a vaccine appointment plus $37.24 for the Kennel Cough vaccine just so my dog can get a vaccine to board at a kennel. Previously, you simply were charged for a tech fee when your pup needed a vaccine (and not any doctor care), but now you are charged for the doctor fee. Please change this policy!" This indicates a recent policy change regarding vaccine appointments and the associated fees, which some clients find impactful on their budget.

Several features distinguish Banfield Pet Hospital, based on the provided customer feedback:

  • Highly Praised Veterinarians: The positive mention of "Dr Kirk" being "amazing," answering questions with "honesty and patience," not rushing appointments, and being "very calming to my dogs who are usually very nervous" is a significant highlight. This demonstrates the individual excellence and empathetic approach of certain veterinary professionals within the hospital.
  • Reasonable Prices (for some services/doctors): One customer notes that "their prices are reasonable," which contrasts with the specific concern raised about the vaccine appointment fee. This suggests that the perceived affordability might vary depending on the service rendered or the client's overall experience with the cost structure.
  • Patience and Calmness with Nervous Pets: The ability of veterinarians like Dr. Kirk to be "very calming to my dogs who are usually very nervous" is a crucial feature, especially for pet owners whose animals experience anxiety during vet visits. This creates a less stressful experience for the pets.
  • Thorough and Honest Communication: Dr. Kirk's willingness to "answer my many questions with honesty and patience" indicates a commitment to clear and comprehensive communication, allowing pet owners to feel well-informed and confident in the care their pets receive.
  • Standardized Care Model: As a national chain, Banfield often operates under a standardized protocol, which can ensure consistency in service delivery and access to a broad network of veterinary knowledge and resources.

In terms of promotional information, Banfield Pet Hospital leverages its brand recognition and its comprehensive wellness plans (though not explicitly detailed in these specific reviews for this location, they are a hallmark of Banfield). The positive experiences with specific veterinarians, like Dr. Kirk, serve as strong endorsements, highlighting the quality of individual care available. The promise of "reasonable prices" (despite specific concerns about vaccine fees) can be attractive to a broad range of pet owners. The general emphasis on preventive care and comprehensive services, accessible through a centralized system, positions Banfield as a practical and reliable choice for ongoing pet health management. Addressing customer feedback directly, particularly regarding pricing policies and environmental considerations like "Paw Safe salt," could further enhance their local appeal and demonstrate responsiveness to client needs. Overall, Banfield Pet Hospital in Medfield aims to be a dependable "Pet Hospital" providing essential veterinary services with a focus on preventive care and patient comfort.

I had a wonderful experience with the group at Banfield in Westwood under Dr Martin. I'm usually very worried about my cats and leaving them in another's care - but everyone was friendly, knowledgeable and comforting especially with my senior cat!
