If you have the opportunity to go to a different Banfield, I would do it. The mission gorge location is horrible. I usually end up having to go to this location because of last minute emergency situations and this is the only Banfield that usually has appointments open same day or next day (for obvious reasons) . I brought my senior cat here in September and had blood work done for surgery. I brought up concerns about his weight since he was extremely thin, but I couldn’t get him to gain weight. They told me that he was fine and not that underweight and just told me to feed him more often. They didn’t tell me that he had in fact, lost 2 pounds since is previous visit and they failed to tell me that they heard a heart murmur. I only just found this out because I brought him to another location and was read the notes the vet left in my pets records but never actually told me. At a different location, a vet recommended specific bloodwork after expressing my concerns for a second time and discovered that my cat actually has a thyroid issue usually caused by a tumor. Had I not gone to this new vet office I would have never been able to take care of my cat properly. he lost a half pound since I brought him in in September. They will use every single bit of your pet plan before it’s actually needed and will pressure you into unnecessary extra procedures and tests. You have to basically act like you don’t care about your pet to keep them from gouging you. Also, their office says “under construction” but it is literally has looked like that for the last year and a half.

Banfield Pet Hospital Introduce
This introduction addresses the Banfield Pet Hospital located at 3396 Murphy Canyon Rd, San Diego, CA 92123, USA. Their phone number is (858) 565-9780, and the mobile phone number is +1 858-565-9780. As a well-known chain within the Pet Hospital category, Banfield Pet Hospital typically offers a range of veterinary services and wellness plans. However, it is crucial for local users to be aware of recent customer feedback regarding this specific location before making a decision about their pet's care.
Based on the available customer reviews, there appear to be significant concerns regarding the service quality and practices at the Banfield Pet Hospital on Murphy Canyon Rd. One reviewer explicitly advises pet owners to seek alternative Banfield locations if possible, citing a negative experience at the "mission gorge location" (it is important to note this might be a different Banfield location, and the reviewer ended up at the Murphy Canyon Rd location due to emergency and availability). However, their subsequent experience at the Murphy Canyon Rd location also raises serious issues.
The first reviewer details a situation involving their senior cat who underwent blood work for surgery. Despite the owner raising concerns about the cat's significant weight loss, they were allegedly told the cat was "fine" and simply needed to eat more. Disturbingly, the reviewer later discovered at a different veterinary practice that the Banfield location on Murphy Canyon Rd had failed to inform them about a two-pound weight loss since the previous visit and the presence of a heart murmur noted in the records. This lack of communication and potential oversight in not addressing significant health indicators is a serious concern for pet owners.
Furthermore, the same reviewer claims that this Banfield location tends to "use every single bit of your pet plan before it’s actually needed" and pressures owners into "unnecessary extra procedures and tests." They suggest that owners need to be overly cautious to avoid being financially exploited. Additionally, they mention that the office has been described as "under construction" for an extended period (reportedly a year and a half), which could potentially impact the environment and overall experience of visiting the clinic.
The second review echoes a deeply negative experience. A pet owner brought their cat in due to a sudden loss of appetite and lethargy. Despite having "insurance" (presumably a Banfield wellness plan or similar), they were allegedly charged $509 for "just some regular blood work." The reviewer questions the value of the insurance if such a significant cost was incurred for basic diagnostics. Following the blood work, the owner was reportedly told that their cat was "fine" with no explanation for the concerning symptoms. When the owner requested further tests, the "doctor" allegedly dismissed them, suggesting an overnight ER visit as the only alternative.
The situation escalated as the cat continued to deteriorate, not eating or drinking for three days. Upon calling Banfield back, the owner was allegedly told that they "can’t do anything for him anymore." The reviewer expresses significant dissatisfaction with the $509 expense that yielded no diagnosis or improvement in their cat's condition, strongly advising others to avoid this clinic.
Based on these two reviews, several critical points need to be considered by local users regarding the Banfield Pet Hospital on Murphy Canyon Rd:
Potential for Misdiagnosis or Oversight: The first review suggests a failure to adequately address significant health concerns (weight loss, heart murmur) and a lack of communication regarding these findings.
Questionable Billing Practices: Both reviews raise concerns about the value of their pet plans and the potential for unnecessary charges or maximizing plan usage prematurely.
Poor Communication and Dismissive Behavior: The second review highlights a lack of explanation for a pet's serious symptoms and a perceived unwillingness to pursue further diagnostic options.
Facility Condition: The prolonged "under construction" status mentioned in the first review could indicate a less than ideal environment for pet owners and their animals.
Given these serious negative experiences shared by recent customers, it is difficult to objectively describe positive features or services without further information or contradictory feedback. While Banfield as a national chain typically offers a range of services including:
Wellness Plans: Often marketed as a way to budget for routine care like vaccinations and check-ups.
General Medical Care: Diagnosis and treatment of illnesses and injuries.
Surgery: Routine and more complex surgical procedures.
Dental Care: Cleanings and treatment of dental issues.
Vaccinations: Core and lifestyle-based immunizations.
Diagnostics: Blood work, imaging, and other tests.
The negative reviews suggest that the execution and quality of these services at this specific location may be compromised. The perceived features, based on the negative feedback, could unfortunately include:
Potentially Inattentive or Dismissive Staff: As suggested by the handling of the weight loss and lack of follow-up in the first review, and the dismissal of further testing in the second.
Aggressive Billing or Plan Utilization: As claimed by the first reviewer regarding the pet plan and unnecessary tests.
Lack of Clear Communication: Evidenced by the failure to inform the owner about the heart murmur and weight loss.
Potentially Compromised Facility: Due to the prolonged construction.
Currently, no promotional information specific to the Banfield Pet Hospital on Murphy Canyon Rd has been found in conjunction with these reviews. Given the serious nature of the complaints, any general promotions offered by the Banfield chain should be weighed against the potential negative experiences reported by these customers.
Local users in the San Diego area considering Banfield Pet Hospital on Murphy Canyon Rd should exercise extreme caution and carefully consider the recent negative feedback. While the convenience of same-day or next-day appointments might be appealing, the reported issues regarding communication, diagnostic thoroughness, billing practices, and facility condition are significant concerns. It is strongly recommended that pet owners seek additional recent reviews from other sources to gain a broader perspective or consider alternative veterinary care providers in the San Diego area to ensure the health and well-being of their pets.
In conclusion, the Banfield Pet Hospital located at 3396 Murphy Canyon Rd in San Diego has received concerning negative feedback regarding its service quality, communication, and billing practices. Local pet owners are urged to carefully consider these reviews and potentially seek alternative veterinary care options to ensure their pets receive the best possible treatment. Direct contact with the clinic and seeking additional recent testimonials may provide further insight, but the currently available information raises significant red flags.

Feb 18, 2025 · Amber MykaelsNo help! Took my cat in yesterday because he stopped eating and started being lethargic. He had the “insurance” and still made me pay $509 for just some regular blood work, what exactly is the insurance supposed to cover then? At the end of the day they told me he was fine and had no clue why he stopped eating, I asked if he could get more tests done and the “doctor” brushed me off and said the only option would be to take him to the ER overnight. Today it’s the 3rd day my cat hasn’t ate or drank anything. Called this place back and told me they can’t do anything for him anymore. Thank you for making me spend $509 just for my cat to still be feeling/ acting the same. Don’t bring your pets here!

Apr 08, 2025 · Denise CastanedaI recently got my plan with banfield and so far no issues and the pricing isn't too bad. I love how they make us feel welcomed and informed. Reading through the other reviews has me a little unsettled die to the fact that they weren't good reviews. Personally I have had nothing but good experiences. I dropped off my boston terrier for a dental cleaning under anesthesia. I can say that the employees I've come in contact with have been very nice and comforting. It's hard to leave your fur baby in the hands of others but I feel like he's in good hands.
Jun 29, 2024 · krystal wilmothSuch and wonderful and professional staff. Thank you so much for being there for us and our beloved Lilly at her final vet visit. Your compassion and commitment made her passing so much more tolerable as we spent our final moments together before letting her go. Thank you all so very much! I’m truly grateful.
