I took my dog on for an appointment and nail trim. They kept her for 6 hours, and when they called, they said she was too nervous to do the nail trim. I for but their anxiety medication and bring her back another day. They couldn't get her fecal exam done, so they sent it home with me to collect. They couldn't give her her medication, so they sent it home with me. I weighed her when I arrived for them. They also charged her for an adult visit. She's 10 months old. She's only 36 lbs and a mini try colored aussie mix. Not aggressive... just nervous. What exactly did I pay them to do? I'm still not sure. I only gave them 2 stars because they smiled and were nice while being incompetent.

Banfield Pet Hospital Introduce

Banfield Pet Hospital, located at 12142 Jefferson Ave, Newport News, VA 23602, USA, operates as a prominent chain of veterinary clinics, falling under the "Pet Hospital" category. With contact numbers (757) 881-9075 and mobile +1 757-881-9075, this particular Banfield location is situated inside PetSmart, a common setup for many Banfield branches, designed to offer convenience for pet owners combining veterinary visits with pet supply shopping. As part of a large network of over 700 hospitals nationwide, Banfield Pet Hospital aims to provide accessible and standardized veterinary care.

The environment at Banfield Pet Hospital locations, including the Newport News branch, is typically designed to be clean and functional, consistent with a corporate veterinary setting. While the aim is to create a professional and welcoming atmosphere, some client experiences suggest that the environment can, at times, feel impersonal or rushed, especially during busy periods. One review describes a dog being "too nervous" for a nail trim after a six-hour stay, indicating that the clinic environment might not always be conducive to reducing anxiety in sensitive pets without specific interventions. Another review recounts an incident where a dog allegedly sustained injuries, with staff claiming the dog "was hitting her face against the cage," which points to potential challenges in managing anxious animals within their kennel environment. These accounts suggest that while the physical space may be well-maintained, the high volume of patients and the pace of operations might affect the individualized attention some pets receive, particularly those with pre-existing anxieties.

Banfield Pet Hospital offers a comprehensive array of veterinary services, typically emphasizing preventative care through its signature Optimum Wellness Plans (OWP). The services generally include:

  • Wellness Exams and Preventative Care: Routine comprehensive physical exams are a cornerstone of their service, aimed at monitoring a pet's overall health and detecting issues early. They offer multiple wellness plans tailored to different life stages and needs, including Active Care, Active Care Plus, and Special Care, which cover a range of services like vaccinations, diagnostic testing, and deworming.

  • Vaccinations: All routinely recommended vaccinations for dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens, including rabies, feline leukemia, and parvovirus, are available and often included in their wellness plans.

  • Parasite Control: Screening and treatment plans for internal and external parasites, with options for parasite prevention and medications. This can be added to wellness plans at an additional cost.

  • Dental Care: Professional dental cleanings are offered to support oral health, with some plans including annual cleanings. Many locations also perform dental extractions and other oral surgeries, supported by digital dental X-ray capabilities.

  • General Surgery: Standard surgical procedures are performed, including spaying and neutering. Some locations may offer soft tissue surgeries.

  • Diagnostic and Imaging Services: This includes digital radiography (X-rays) for examining various body systems, and in-house laboratory diagnostics for same-day results, aiding in quick diagnosis of illnesses.

  • Nutritional Advice: Guidance on providing a balanced diet tailored to a pet's life stage, lifestyle, and condition.

  • Coat and Skin Care Treatment: Assessment of abnormalities and treatment plans for skin and coat conditions.

  • Gastrointestinal Illness Diagnosis and Treatment: Addressing issues like upset stomachs or vomiting.

  • Orthopedic Evaluation and Treatment: Assessments for musculoskeletal and neurological issues.

  • Microchipping: A service for permanent pet identification.

  • In-house Pharmacy and Online Pharmacy: For convenient access to prescribed medications and pet products.

  • End-of-Life Care: Providing compassionate services for pets at the end of their lives.

  • Drop-off Services: Allowing pet owners to leave their pets for services, sometimes with curbside drop-off available.

  • Virtual Visits: Included with Optimum Wellness Plans, providing 24/7 access to veterinary professionals for advice and consultations.

A primary feature of Banfield Pet Hospital is its emphasis on Optimum Wellness Plans (OWP). These are subscription-based packages designed to make preventative care more affordable and manageable through monthly payments. The plans typically include unlimited office visits, annual physical exams, vaccinations, and various diagnostic tests, with discounts on other services and products. This model is a significant draw for many pet owners who prefer a predictable cost structure for routine veterinary care.

However, customer reviews suggest that the implementation of services and the overall client experience at specific Banfield locations can be inconsistent. While some reviews praise the friendliness and competence of staff, others raise concerns about communication, perceived competence, and animal handling. For instance, the review describing a dog being kept for six hours without a successful nail trim or fecal exam, and medication being sent home, points to potential operational inefficiencies or challenges in managing anxious pets. Another severe criticism involves allegations of "zero empathy or care," mishandling of an elderly dog resulting in injury, and poor communication, including a lack of doctor availability for concerns and contradictory information provided by staff. These experiences highlight that while the corporate structure provides a broad range of services, the quality of execution can vary.

Banfield Pet Hospital generally promotes itself through its nationwide presence, convenient locations (often within PetSmart stores), and the financial predictability offered by its Optimum Wellness Plans. They highlight the benefits of preventative care and the savings that can be achieved through their membership packages. Their online presence, including their website and mobile app, facilitates appointment scheduling and access to pet health records. Promotional materials emphasize their commitment to "quality and attentive health and wellness care" and treating pets "like family." They also promote virtual visits and their Vet Chat™ service as convenient ways for pet owners to connect with veterinary professionals. Discounts on additional pet enrollments and savings on preventive pet care are also key promotional points. Despite a corporate structure, they aim to convey a message of dedication to individual pet health and responsible pet ownership. However, the varying customer experiences underscore the importance for potential clients to consider local reviews and directly assess the specific Banfield location they plan to visit.

Do NOT go here. As a long time wellness plan owner, this banfield needs to shut down. They have zero empathy or care for you pets. My dog, who they have under special care due to them knowing her age related issues, was mishandled and came back with a cut and her whole nose being bruised. When I told them about it at the office they said that they can’t control what the animals do in their kennels and Kayla told me that any complaints will come back to her so it won’t matter if I contact corporate. I asked if I could speak to the doctor and they brought some regional office manager who I’ve never seen or heard of. Dr. Streuble did not come out to address any concerns .This dog is almost 15 and is scared of any strangers, but they claimed she was hitting her face against the cage. She was there for dental, which they didn’t do for health reasons that they found which I understand and notified me at 10am that she would be ready at 2( 4 hours is a ton of time as my dog was in foster care until 9 and they have all of this in the notes, she shakes and breaks down when we get to banfield but hasn’t done that anywhere else) but they wouldn’t release her to me when I was there until I got irate about it at 230. The doctor wasn’t back from the lunch break. Which I was later told it was a personal break, even though they told me her whole team was on lunch. When she got back they scrambled to get her out of there and were laughing in the back. The negligence at this place is insane.they lie directly to you face. They told me they were on the phone with my wife, and they hadn’t talked to her in months. Please please take you loved pets somewhere else! Kayla and whoever the regional office manager is, should be ashamed the way they treat the animals. Corporate also had no idea who the regional manager was,so again, banfield is a scam and I’m looking into negligence.

Banfield has been the best with my present dog and my past dogs that i have had. They have great rates and the care is awesome. The treat your animals like they were their own. I would recommend them to anyone who need medical care for their pets.

Always professional, courteous, friendly and well organized. After a drop off for comprehensive exam, they will call to keep me informed of any concerns that they feel need to be addressed for my approval.

I dont have names to share but every person encountered at the clinics seem very pet friendly, thorough in the sharing of information about my dog and understanding of my pets needs. Very happy with my choice of Banfield.
