We have been with Banfield for about 15 years. Liz at the front desk is awesome. My only complaint is when my dog Henry had to be put to sleep, we had just renewed the yearly contract. I had to pay for the rest of the year even though My dog had passed away.

Welcome to Banfield Pet Hospital

Banfield Pet Hospital, situated at 950 Hanes Mall Blvd, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, USA, is a prominent "Pet Hospital" that serves the local community with a wide array of veterinary services. As part of a larger national network, this Banfield location aims to provide accessible and consistent pet care. For direct inquiries and appointments, they can be reached at (336) 765-8339.

Environment and Operational Model

Banfield Pet Hospitals are typically integrated within larger retail pet stores, such as Petco, offering a convenient one-stop solution for pet owners. The environment is designed to be modern, clean, and efficient, prioritizing a streamlined experience for routine veterinary visits. This setup can be advantageous for pet parents who appreciate the ease of combining vet appointments with pet supply shopping. Banfield emphasizes a structured approach to pet care, often utilizing technology for appointment scheduling and record keeping to enhance convenience.

However, the operational model also involves a focus on their signature Optimum Wellness Plans (OWPs). These are subscription-based packages designed to cover routine and preventative care services over a year, with monthly or annual payment options. While these plans are promoted for offering discounts on bundled services and potentially saving clients money on preventative care, some customer feedback indicates concerns regarding the financial commitment, especially in unforeseen circumstances.

Comprehensive Services and the Optimum Wellness Plan

As a full-service "Pet Hospital," Banfield Pet Hospital at Hanes Mall Blvd offers a broad spectrum of veterinary services, often integrated into their OWP model:

  • Preventative Care: This is the core of Banfield's philosophy, heavily promoted through their OWPs. Services include unlimited office visits, comprehensive nose-to-tail physical exams (typically two per year), routinely recommended vaccinations (including Rabies, Distemper/Parvo, Bordetella, Leptospirosis, Lyme disease for dogs, and FVRCP, Feline Leukemia for cats), diagnostic testing (such as fecal exams and blood work), and deworming. OWPs also often include virtual visits and 24/7 access to veterinary professionals via Pet Chat for advice.
  • Diagnostics and Imaging: The hospital utilizes in-house laboratory diagnostics for quick results on blood tests, urinalysis, and fecal exams. They also offer digital radiography (X-rays) and ultrasound for more in-depth diagnosis of internal conditions.
  • Surgical Services: Common surgical procedures such as spaying and neutering are offered. Other general surgeries and mass removals may also be available.
  • Dental Care: Comprehensive oral exams, dental cleanings, and extractions are provided, often with dental X-rays. Professional dental cleaning is included in some higher-tier OWP plans.
  • Illness and Injury Treatment: They diagnose and treat a wide range of acute and chronic conditions, including skin and coat issues, allergies, ear infections, gastrointestinal problems, and various injuries.
  • Nutritional Counseling: Advice on appropriate diets and weight management is available, often included as a "Pet Wellness 1-1" coaching session in OWPs.
  • Microchipping: This vital service for pet identification and recovery is also offered.
  • Pharmacy Services: Banfield typically maintains an in-house pharmacy for convenient access to prescribed medications.
  • Additional Services & Products: Discounts on various other Banfield products and services not covered by the OWP are usually provided to OWP members, including parasite control products, prescriptions (with some exceptions), and specific skin and coat care items.

It's important to note that while OWPs cover extensive preventative care, they are generally not pet insurance. They typically do not cover treatments for accidents, illnesses, emergencies, or specialized procedures outside the OWP scope. This distinction is crucial for pet owners to understand to manage their expectations regarding costs for unexpected health issues.

Key Features and Considerations
  • Optimum Wellness Plans (OWPs): This is Banfield's signature feature, offering bundled preventative care at a predictable monthly or annual cost. While designed to encourage regular wellness visits and make routine care more affordable, some clients have raised concerns about the contractual nature. For instance, one review highlights a complaint about having to pay for the remainder of a yearly contract even after a pet's passing, which can be a significant emotional and financial burden during a difficult time.
  • Standardized Care across Locations: Being part of a large corporate network, Banfield aims for consistent service protocols and quality across its many hospitals. This can be a benefit for clients who travel or move, as their pet's records and care philosophy will generally transfer seamlessly.
  • Accessibility and Convenience: The location within a retail store and emphasis on online booking and digital record access contribute to a convenient experience for many pet owners.
  • Staff Compassion (Mixed Reviews): While one reviewer praises Liz at the front desk as "awesome," another review expresses a concerning sentiment: "I'm sure the staff here care a lot for animals, but our experience left us feeling like they care more about upselling extras than they do for your pet." This suggests a potential perceived emphasis on sales rather than purely medical needs, which can detract from the client's trust and overall experience.
  • Pet Comfort (Mixed Reviews): One reviewer stated that their dog, who previously had no issues with vets, "HATES this place." This indicates that while Banfield aims for a positive environment, some pets may find the specific atmosphere or practices at this location stressful. The same reviewer also suggests that the "North side location" of Banfield is preferred, implying a possible difference in environment or staff approach between different branches of the same hospital network.
Promotional Information and Client Feedback

Banfield Pet Hospital generally promotes its services based on comprehensive preventative care, the value of its Optimum Wellness Plans, and the convenience of its locations. They emphasize their commitment to responsible pet ownership and the health and happiness of pets.

However, the provided customer reviews offer a nuanced perspective that is crucial for prospective clients:

  • One long-term client, with "about 15 years" of experience with Banfield, praised "Liz at the front desk" as "awesome." However, their "only complaint" was the policy regarding OWP contracts after a pet's death: "My only complaint is when my dog Henry had to be put to sleep, we had just renewed the yearly contract. I had to pay for the rest of the year even though My dog had passed away." This highlights a significant financial and emotional challenge associated with the OWP model that prospective clients should be fully aware of before enrolling.
  • Another review expresses a strong negative sentiment: "I'm sure the staff here care a lot for animals, but our experience left us feeling like they care more about upselling extras than they do for your pet." This perceived focus on sales over genuine care is a critical concern for pet owners seeking trustworthy medical advice. The reviewer's observation that their "dog who has never had issues with a vet HATES this place" and their recommendation to "Save you and your pet the hassle and go to the North side location instead. The extra 15 minute drive is well worth it. (There is a reason this location always has more availability than the North side)" is a strong warning. This suggests that the Hanes Mall Blvd location may have specific issues that lead to lower client satisfaction and potentially higher pet anxiety compared to other Banfield branches.

In conclusion, Banfield Pet Hospital at 950 Hanes Mall Blvd in Winston-Salem operates as a major "Pet Hospital" offering a wide range of preventative and general veterinary services, primarily through its OWP model. While it strives for convenience and comprehensive care, potential clients should carefully consider the contractual nature of the OWP and be aware of the feedback regarding perceived upselling practices and potential for pet stress at this specific location, as highlighted by existing customer reviews. Exploring all aspects, including the financial commitments and the experiences of other pet owners, will enable an informed decision.

The online appointment scheduling is very easy and convenient, I booked a schedule that night and the next day early morning someone called to confirm they had gotten our dog on their appointment list. The appointment also is very convenient if you have work because you can drop off your pet early before you go to work and pick them up in the afternoon. And the staff will call as soon as they have report on what is going on with your pet and very detailed in their explanation that is easy to understand. And everyone has always been very friendly and accommodating.

I have been taking my Yorkie mix here for years and have their Optimum Wellness Plan which includes a yearly dental cleaning, vaccines, and his monthly preventative medicines for about $65 per month. They are very professional and take great care of my baby.

My dog suffered an injury over the weekend he is very lethargic is not eating so I took him to Banfield Pet Hospital. I have the wellness plan for 2 dogs and my one dog has been with Banfield almost 10 years The receptionist x 2 were non-caring and told me how busy they were, that is not a customer issue! They had a trainee who was so caring, hopefully the behavior there will not rub off on her They told me they had to consult with the Veterinarian who was sitting in an office most of my time there. If I could get out of the wellness plan I would It is like a doggie mill there. Over 40 bookings for the day so you tell me is there caring going on?
