We adore Balanced Pet NW. Dr Watson is amazing, so knowledgeable. Both our dog and cat get outstanding care. From the cat: I agree with my human. I particularly like the acupuncture and massage services. (I believe they call the massages by another name. Whatever. They are massages.). I would warn other patients that nothing good happens in the back. Prepare yourself if they take you to the back. From the dog: I agree with human and cat. Among other services, I once got a pretty epic nipple piercing. Nothing good happens in the back. I once tried to file a complaint with Dr Watson as I was poked in the butt while in the back. Dr. Watson says taking a treat implies consent to this. So be warned of going in the back, especially if you take a treat.

Balanced Pet NW Introduce
Balanced Pet NW, situated at 25303 Big Valley Rd NE, Poulsbo, WA 98370, USA, is a distinguished veterinary practice known for its integrative approach to pet healthcare. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Watson, the clinic, which was formerly known as Big Valley Vet, has cultivated a reputation for providing exceptional care that combines the best of conventional Western medicine with a diverse range of complementary and alternative therapies. Pet owners can reach them at (360) 697-1650 or +1 360-697-1650.
Operating within the "Pet Hospital" category, Balanced Pet NW stands out by offering a holistic perspective on animal well-being. This means they look beyond just treating symptoms, aiming to address the underlying imbalances that can affect a pet's mind, body, and spirit. This unique philosophy attracts pet parents seeking comprehensive care that extends beyond standard veterinary services.
The environment at Balanced Pet NW is consistently described by clients as welcoming, comfortable, and pet-friendly. Unlike many traditional veterinary clinics that might have sterile, intimidating spaces, Balanced Pet NW has thoughtfully designed its exam rooms to minimize stress for animals. Reviewers specifically highlight the use of comfy mats on the floor instead of big scary metal tables, a detail that significantly contributes to a pet's comfort and willingness to engage during visits. This creates a relaxed atmosphere where pets, like Kazzy the dog, are noted to "absolutely love going," showing no signs of shaking and greeting Dr. Watson with wagging tails. The clinic's commitment to creating a low-stress environment underscores their compassionate approach to animal care. The emphasis on interaction, where Dr. Watson talks to pets and greets them as "the most important one in the room," further reinforces this nurturing environment.
Balanced Pet NW offers a comprehensive suite of services that integrate both conventional and alternative veterinary medicine. Their offerings include, but are not limited to:
-
Integrative Annual and Diagnostic Exams: These thorough examinations blend traditional diagnostic techniques with holistic assessments, allowing Dr. Watson to gain a complete picture of a pet's health. They look for subtle changes that might signify an imbalance, combining owner observations with expert palpation and analysis of gait and stance.
-
Acupuncture and Electroacupuncture (EAP): Highly praised by clients, these services involve inserting sterile needles at specific points to stimulate healing responses. This is a key component of their pain management and overall wellness strategies.
-
Soft Tissue Manipulation (Osteopathy): Dr. Watson focuses on hands-on manipulation of body tissues, specifically soft tissues, to adjust organs, glands, blood vessels, lymph, nerves, and fascia. This differs from chiropractic's skeletal focus and aims to restore internal balance.
-
Laser Therapy (Photobiomodulation): An effective approach for managing pain, inflammation, and promoting wound healing, often used for joint and spine conditions, hot spots, and post-operative recovery.
-
Functional Nutritional Analysis & Holistic Diet/Supplement Case Review: Recognizing the profound impact of diet, the clinic provides in-depth analysis of a pet's current nutritional regimen to recommend the most beneficial foods and supplements, including discussions about raw or homemade diets.
-
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Case Review: A detailed evaluation of a pet's underlying energetic pattern, including an analysis of various organs and body systems, to guide tailored treatments.
-
Human-Animal Energetics (HAE): This unique service acknowledges the deep connection between pets and their owners, assessing the owner's internal state to help improve the pet's mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
-
Conventional Veterinary Services: Alongside holistic therapies, they provide essential conventional care, including vaccinations (with the option for titer testing to avoid unnecessary re-vaccinations), specialized lab work (both in-house and reference labs), and digital X-rays and in-house ultrasound for rapid and accurate internal diagnostics. They also address dental health with preventative measures and anesthetic dental procedures when required.
-
Specialized Surgical Procedures: While focused on holistic wellness, the clinic also offers specialized surgical procedures such as ovary-sparing spays (hysterectomy) and vasectomies, catering to pet owners who wish to maintain hormonal balance while preventing reproduction.
-
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) & Peptides: Advanced regenerative therapies for various conditions.
The key features that set Balanced Pet NW apart are Dr. Watson's profound knowledge and her holistic, personalized approach. Clients consistently praise Dr. Watson for her thoroughness, patience, and personable demeanor. She is noted for her ability to combine Western medicine with alternative practices seamlessly, providing individualized treatment plans that genuinely work for each pet. The clinic's dedication to making pets comfortable is a significant differentiating factor, as evidenced by pet responses like "Kazzy absolutely loves going" to the vet.
The humorous, pet-perspective reviews highlight some of the more invasive, yet necessary, aspects of veterinary care ("Nothing good happens in the back"). While delivered with levity, these comments indirectly confirm that while the front-end experience is designed for comfort, comprehensive care, which can include pokes and prods, is still provided when necessary, albeit with an effort to make it as gentle as possible. Dr. Watson's approach to pet consent (the "treat implies consent" anecdote) further emphasizes her understanding of animal behavior and her lighthearted, yet professional, interaction style.
While specific "promotional information" in the traditional sense of discounts or specials was not explicitly provided, Balanced Pet NW's value proposition lies in its unique and comprehensive integrative care model. They offer treatment packages that allow for deep focus on a pet's wellness journey, tailored to specific challenges like longevity, healthy weight, mental-emotional balance, mobility, or cancer treatment. These packages typically include an exam, relevant lab work, diet upgrades, supplement/herb recommendations, hands-on therapies, and a follow-up schedule. This structured approach to care can be seen as a form of value for clients, ensuring a holistic and long-term wellness plan for their pets. Prospective clients interested in understanding the financial aspects of their specialized services and packages are encouraged to contact the clinic directly via phone. The personalized nature of their care suggests that they focus on providing the best possible treatment plan for each animal rather than relying heavily on generalized promotions.
In conclusion, Balanced Pet NW, under the guidance of Dr. Watson, provides a highly specialized and compassionate veterinary experience in Poulsbo, WA. Its distinctive blend of traditional Western medicine with holistic therapies like acupuncture, advanced diagnostics, and personalized nutritional counseling makes it an ideal choice for pet owners seeking comprehensive, integrated care. The clinic's dedication to creating a low-stress environment and its emphasis on treating each pet as a valued individual underscore its commitment to exceptional animal well-being.

Oct 08, 2024 · Lynette AckmanWe started bringing our sweet dog Kazzy to Balanced Pet over a year ago when it was still called Big Valley Vet. Without a doubt Dr. Watson is the best veterinarian we have ever found for our girl. For starters Kazzy absolutely loves going. Her tail wags, she doesn't shake, and she loves Dr Watson! Dr Watson talks to Kazzy and greets her like she's the most important one in the room! The exam rooms are set up to make the dog feel as comfortable as possible with comfy mats on the floor instead of a big scary metal table. I love the holistic approach that Dr Watson takes. She combines the best of Western medicine with alternative practices and philosophies. Just what I have been looking for for Kazzy for years!! So relieved we finally found her! She is thorough, patient, personable and very knowledgeable. Would not take Kazzy anywhere else!
Oct 18, 2024 · Michelle B.I give 5 Solid Stars to Dr. Shelby and her caring manner with our cherished Australian Shepherd. Dr. Shelby is easygoing, informative and helpful when it comes to vaccinations and other health concerns with our beloved dog. We have been going to Big Valley Vet for many years and have been very happy with their care, especially Dr. Shelby. Recently they have gone through an overhaul with their appointment technology and have moved everything to a new app system which seems to work pretty well and their name is now "Balanced Pet NW." The approach is to engage both traditional and more holistic methods to treat pets from all angles. I appreciate that, and will stay open to all different sorts of treatments when they're needed. Having said that the prices have gone up quite a bit since I visited last year, but I think it's on par with other veterinary services in the area, and I want to go to an independently owned (not corporate) vet and am willing to pay for that. Supporting independent veterinarians is important to me in our community, and it's very difficult for vets to compete with massive corporations.
Feb 22, 2024 · carrie stamperMy pets receive wonderful care from Dr. Watson and her entire team. They are knowledgeable, caring, and carefully listen to not only what I tell them but using careful observation of and interaction with my pets. From the thoughtful low lighting in the exam room to the down-on-the-floor at pet level examination, their aim is to keep my pets feeling comfortable and safe while checking and diagnosing them. And on top of that the holistic approach makes me feel confident they are getting the best options for their care!
Oct 10, 2024 · Janine HansonBalanced Pet NW is the top pick veterinary practice in the area!!! I was visiting from out of town and in search for an Intergrative Veterinarian for my pup to establish care while on travel. I also wanted acupuncture treatments for him. We came to the right place! Dr. Watson is very knowledgeable and caring! She came in and sat down on the floor and made my pup feel as comfortable as he could get. She listened and provided a wealth of knowledge and advice. For those who don't know what an INTERGRATIVE veterinarian is: it is a veterinarian focused on 'preventative' care and one who treats the root cause of a problem, not just treating the symptoms. They also focus on a more natural/holistic way of care before treating with medications (as necessary) that may have detrimental or long term side effects. From the moment you enter the clinic, it is impressive to see the high quality products on display! I didn't see any ultra-processed foods, like you see in most other clinics. They only carry the best of the best! If you live near this clinic, consider yourself lucky!!! I live in Virginia and we do not have Intergrative veterinarians in my area. I recommend Balanced Pet NW to anyone that has a pet with an issue that has been difficult to resolve or anyone with a healthy pet, who wants to ensure they stay healthy. Whenever I am back in the area this will be my 'go to' veterinarian! Dr. Watson has gone above and beyond in answering all my questions and keeping in touch while researching other questions I had for her. She is amazing! But I cannot end this review without commenting on her staff! Kayla at the front desk is super nice, professional, and very helpful. The entire staff is top notch!
