When I had a life threatening emergency with my shih Tzu I felt so hopeless and overwhelmed. I was referred to AWS and they went out of their way to save my dog when she was near death. They are all wonderful but Dr. Chelsea was compassionate from her body language to her above and beyond care of my dog. It's hard to find someone as special as that who works in the Veterinary system. Point blank, she made a safe space for my dog to fight for her life and make a full recovery. We are forever grateful.

Welcome to AWS Community Veterinary Clinic
The AWS Community Veterinary Clinic, located at 46 Holland Rd, Kennebunk, ME 04043, USA, and reachable at (207) 292-2424, is much more than a typical "Pet Hospital." It operates as a crucial component of the Animal Welfare Society (AWS), a private 501(c)(3) non-profit humane society founded in 1967. This unique affiliation underscores its core mission: to provide affordable and accessible veterinary care to both the resident animals at the AWS shelter and, significantly, to pets belonging to community members. The clinic's establishment in 2018 dramatically increased AWS's capacity to offer medical care, aiming to keep pets happy, healthy, and, most importantly, at home with the people who love them.
The environment at the AWS Community Veterinary Clinic is characterized by a strong sense of compassion, professionalism, and dedication. As part of a larger animal welfare organization on a 40-acre campus, the clinic benefits from a comprehensive, fear-free adoption center. The staff, from the front desk assistants to the veterinarians, are consistently praised in reviews for being "wonderful," "compassionate," "kind," and "great with my dog." This creates a safe and welcoming space that is crucial for both pets and their owners, especially during stressful or emergency situations. The emphasis on gentle handling and patient comfort, as evidenced by assistants playing with a dog while waiting for the vet, contributes to a positive and reassuring experience for the animals. The clinic's commitment to creating a safe space for pets to "fight for their life and make a full recovery" speaks volumes about their dedication to patient well-being.
AWS Community Veterinary Clinic offers a wide array of comprehensive services designed to meet nearly every veterinary need for canine and feline patients. Their services include:
- Wellness and Preventive Care: This foundational aspect of their care includes thorough wellness check-ups, tailored vaccination programs, and routine parasite prevention. The goal is to proactive maintain pet health and detect issues early.
- Diagnostic Services: The clinic is well-equipped with modern diagnostic tools, including digital x-ray, a diagnostic lab for in-house testing, and echocardiography. This allows for quick and accurate diagnosis of various medical conditions.
- Medical Treatments: They provide treatment for a broad spectrum of illnesses and injuries, ranging from common infections to complex chronic diseases. Their compassionate team, including veterinarians like Dr. Chelsea, are dedicated to exploring all options to help pets recover.
- Surgical Procedures: The clinic features several surgery suites and offers a wide range of surgeries, including general soft tissue procedures and dental surgeries. A significant focus is on high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter services, which are crucial for population control and community health.
- Dental Care: A dedicated dental suite ensures comprehensive oral health care, including cleanings, extractions, and other dental procedures vital for a pet's overall well-being.
- Pharmacy Services: An in-clinic pharmacy provides immediate access to prescribed medications, and they also offer a convenient online pharmacy portal for ordering prescription food and medication with direct delivery to clients' homes.
- Microchipping: Recognizing the importance of pet identification for safe returns, microchipping services are a standard offering.
- End-of-Life Care: While not explicitly detailed, a comprehensive clinic often provides compassionate end-of-life counseling and services.
The features that truly set AWS Community Veterinary Clinic apart are its mission-driven approach and its commitment to accessibility and affordability. As a non-profit entity, they aim to provide "affordable and accessible veterinary care" to the community. This is notably achieved through a two-tiered pricing system that includes "Community Pricing" and a "Companion Program." The Companion Program offers discounts on many veterinary services for community members who qualify based on income. This initiative is supported by donations to the "Companions for Life Fund," directly helping to keep pets with their families, even during financial hardship.
The staff's compassion is a recurring highlight in client testimonials. Dr. Chelsea, for instance, is lauded for her "compassionate body language" and "above and beyond care," making a "safe space" for a critically ill dog to recover. This deep level of empathy, combined with their professional knowledge, is a defining characteristic of the clinic. The team's willingness to go "out of their way to save my dog when she was near death" demonstrates their unwavering commitment to animal welfare. Furthermore, their efficient service, such as ensuring a critically ill pup was seen "the next morning on a weekend," showcases their responsiveness to urgent needs. They also emphasize excellent communication, ensuring clients are well-informed about their pet's care.
In terms of promotional information, AWS Community Veterinary Clinic actively engages in community outreach and special programs. They regularly host events such as free microchip and rabies vaccine clinics, as seen with a past event on a specific date (e.g., Saturday, March 22, 2025). These events are specifically designed to make essential preventive care more accessible to pet families, encouraging responsible pet ownership and contributing to public health. While walk-ins might be welcome for such events based on supplies, it's always recommended to RSVP and choose a time slot. Beyond these specific clinics, their commitment to affordable care through the Companion Program acts as a continuous promotional offering, emphasizing their dedication to supporting the local community. They also provide information on financial aid resources like CareCredit and Scratchpay to help clients manage veterinary costs, further underscoring their commitment to accessibility. Their main hours of operation are Monday-Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM, with appointments encouraged, and they are closed on weekends and major holidays.
In conclusion, the AWS Community Veterinary Clinic at 46 Holland Rd, Kennebunk, ME 04043, is an exceptional "Pet Hospital" that serves as a cornerstone of the Animal Welfare Society's broader mission. Apr 30, 2025 · Christina FuscoThe assistants were great with my dog Ruby. They played with her while waiting for the Vet. When the Vet came in, she did a wellness check-up, gave Ruby some shots and took her blood for testing. I was very happy with their services.
