Welcome to Animal Medical and Surgical Center
Animal Medical and Surgical Center, located at 487 PA-18, New Wilmington, PA 16142, USA, operates as a "Pet Hospital" dedicated to providing veterinary care for animals in the local area. The center can be reached via phone at (724) 946-8787, which also serves as their mobile contact. As a pet hospital, they offer a range of services and goods for sale aimed at maintaining the health and well-being of companion animals.
The general environment at Animal Medical and Surgical Center, as indicated by client feedback, appears to be characterized by a focus on patient and compassionate interaction, at least from the perspective of some staff members. One review specifically highlights that "Dr. Sumney and staff are patient, compassionate and willing to answer any questions." This suggests an effort to create a supportive atmosphere where pet owners feel comfortable addressing their concerns and receiving clear communication regarding their pet's health. The belief that a veterinarian would "never recommend anything that she would not recommend for her own pet children or her own 'people' children" speaks to an intended environment of trust and genuine care. However, it is also important to note that environmental perceptions can vary, as indicated by a differing account regarding a specific vet assistant being "rude," which suggests that consistency in the patient-facing environment may fluctuate.
Animal Medical and Surgical Center provides various veterinary services typical of a "Pet Hospital." While a comprehensive list of all specific services is not exhaustively detailed in the provided information, we can infer some key offerings. Their name, "Animal Medical and Surgical Center," itself implies a dual focus on general medical treatments and surgical procedures. This would typically include services such as:
- General Veterinary Consultations: For routine check-ups, diagnostics, and addressing general health concerns.
- Prescription Medications: As seen with the prescribing of Librela for arthritis, the center dispenses and manages veterinary pharmaceuticals for various conditions.
- Pain Management: The use of drugs like Librela suggests a focus on managing chronic conditions such as arthritis, indicating a commitment to alleviating pain in pets.
- Medical Treatment for Ailments: Handling adverse drug reactions and general sick pet visits falls under their medical services.
- Surgical Procedures: The inclusion of "Surgical" in their name implies they are equipped to perform various operations, although specific types of surgeries are not detailed. These would typically range from routine spays and neuters to more complex soft tissue surgeries or emergency interventions.
- Patient Discussions and Decision-Making: As evidenced by the discussion with Dr. Kish regarding Chloe's condition, the center engages in consultations with pet owners to make critical health decisions.
The features of Animal Medical and Surgical Center, based on the provided reviews, present a mixed but insightful picture. A significant feature highlighted by one customer is the perceived honesty and genuine care of Dr. Sumney, who is described as "very honest" and someone who "would never recommend anything that she would not recommend for her own pet children." This suggests a strong ethical foundation and a client-centered approach that builds trust. The willingness of Dr. Sumney and her staff to "answer any questions" also points to a commitment to client education and transparency, which is a valuable feature for pet owners navigating complex health decisions. However, another review offers a contrasting perspective, detailing a negative experience involving a prescribed medication (Librela) that led to severe side effects in a pet and a perception of a lack of knowledge or poor recommendation from Dr. Kish, the vet on duty during an emergency. This review also points to a negative experience with a specific "Vet assistant Kim" being "rude," and a feeling that Dr. Sumney's "genuine care" from years ago has become mere pretense. These contrasting views suggest that while some aspects of the care and staff are highly praised, there may be inconsistencies in patient experience or changes over time. The center's ability to handle emergency situations, even if the outcome was tragic, is a notable feature of a "Surgical and Medical Center." The core feature, from a positive viewpoint, is the patient and compassionate approach of some key personnel like Dr. Sumney, coupled with a commitment to providing answers to client questions.
Regarding promotional information, the available data does not include any direct marketing or specific offers. However, the most potent promotional aspect for Animal Medical and Surgical Center, like many veterinary practices, would be word-of-mouth referrals driven by positive client experiences. The initial review, speaking to Dr. Sumney's honesty and compassion, serves as an excellent testimonial, promoting trust and ethical practice. The implied message is that clients can expect a transparent and caring approach to their pet's health, where recommendations are made with the pet's best interest at heart. The negative review, while critical, inadvertently highlights the center's role in managing serious medical cases, even if the outcome was tragic and the service was deemed unsatisfactory by the client. The fact that the center would immediately address a severe adverse reaction indicates a level of emergency responsiveness, which can be a vital promotional point for a "Pet Hospital." Without explicit promotional content, the center's reputation would be built on the individual experiences of its clients, both positive and negative, as shared in platforms like online reviews. For local users in New Wilmington, PA, considering Animal Medical and Surgical Center, the information suggests a practice that, at its best, aims to provide compassionate and honest care, and is equipped to handle medical and surgical needs, but potential clients should be aware of varying experiences regarding staff interactions and treatment outcomes.

May 14, 2025 · Dale DuncanDr. Sumney prescribed Librela (arthritis drug) for our golden retriever, Chloe. I don’t think Chloe needed it but I trusted Dr. Sumney. Chloe had an adverse side effect and became paralyzed three days after the Librela shot. We immediately took Chloe to see Dr. Kish, vet on duty. After a discussion with Dr. Kish, we made the decision to put Chloe down. We later found out that the drug would have worn off, it was a monthly injection. Dr. Kish should have known and made the recommendation to let the drug wear off. She was clueless. Vet assistant Kim is a rude person. Dr. Sumney genuinely cared years ago…now she pretends. Never been back.
Mar 31, 2025 · Roxanne MitticaExcellent excellent care!! So compassionate and caring. They saved my cat when he had septicemia. Easy to get an appointment when it is urgent.
Dec 17, 2024 · Mary CunninghamOur cat dislocated his back leg. Dr. Sumney attempted to put it back into place... but it wouldn't stay. Surgery was scheduled. After I dropped off our cat for surgery I got a phone call from the doctor. She didn't think surgery was necessary because he was walking pretty well and his body might be able to adjust on its own. She said if he still needed the surgery later, it could still be done. The decision was left up to me. He didn't have the surgery and is doing quite well. I tell you this because I didn't know this doctor and yet she didn't just go ahead and do an unnecessary surgery to make money. She was very knowledgeable and kind. She truly put our cat, and his owners, first. I highly recommend the animal medical center for your pet's care!
