I brought my cat of 13 years in earlier this year and Helms did save her life. But, just this last week my cat had a stroke. It was a Sunday so Helms met with me at the office and told me he felt it was best for her to go home with him to be ‘hospitalized’. I message the next morning asking when would be a good time to call to catch up on her wellbeing, he calls me a minute later and tells me she had passed away due to another stroke early that morning. They offer to handle her cremation for me, tells me it will be 280$. My family says that is too much and they find a place to do it for 160. I go to pay her bill and pick her up so i can handle the cremation myself, the lady at the front asks me who’s doing it, I tell her, come to find out it’s the SAME place they use. So firstly, extremely overcharging for handling the cremation services. And then, when they go to finally give her to me after paying the 400$+ vet bill, they hand me her lifeless body in a tied up trash bag. Maybe this is normal practice but it should not be. I understand possibly the bag being due to smells but at LEAST get some fabric/throw blanket to wrap the poor babies in. With how much the cremation is being overcharged, they can afford it. Nobody wants their lifelong pet/FAMILY MEMBER being handed to them in a literal trash bag. Helms also never spoke to me himself when i went to go pick her up. It felt disrespectful, inconsiderate, and just plain cruel. I will not be returning.

Welcome to Animal Care Center
Animal Care Center, located at 1301 N York St, Muskogee, OK 74403, USA, serves the local community as a dedicated "Pet Hospital" offering a variety of veterinary services. The clinic can be reached at (918) 683-7877 for appointments and inquiries. Under the care of Dr. Helms, the center aims to provide essential medical attention for beloved pets, addressing both routine health needs and unexpected emergencies.
The facility operates as a comprehensive veterinary clinic, providing general animal healthcare. While specific details about the physical environment beyond its function as a pet hospital are not extensively provided, it is understood to be a place where animals receive medical attention. The core focus, as gleaned from customer experiences, appears to be on the immediate and critical care of pets, particularly during urgent situations. The clinic's readiness to see emergency cases, even on weekends, demonstrates a commitment to being available when pets need help most, distinguishing them from other practices that may have more limited hours or availability. This accessibility is a key aspect of their service offering, ensuring that pet owners in distress have a place to turn.
The services offered at Animal Care Center encompass a range of veterinary needs, from diagnostics to treatment and recovery. One notable aspect of their service is the handling of emergencies, as evidenced by a case where a dog was admitted after being hit by a vehicle. Dr. Helms' approach in such critical situations highlights a philosophy focused on giving animals a chance to heal, even when the outlook seems bleak. This involves thorough assessment and, when necessary, consultation with specialists to ensure the best possible care plan. The clinic also handles hospitalization for pets requiring overnight monitoring and intensive care. Furthermore, Animal Care Center provides services related to end-of-life care, including offering cremation services, although customer feedback suggests there may be significant differences in pricing compared to external providers for this particular service.
A distinctive feature of Animal Care Center, particularly Dr. Helms, is the personalized and dedicated attention provided to patients. One customer recounted how Dr. Helms not only saved their 13-year-old cat earlier in the year but also personally met them at the office on a Sunday when the cat suffered a stroke. This level of commitment, including taking the pet home for 'hospitalization,' speaks volumes about the individual care Dr. Helms is willing to provide. Moreover, his proactive communication, including personally calling back to answer questions, is a standout trait that fosters trust and reassurance among pet owners. This direct line of communication is often lauded by clients who appreciate the personal touch in what can often be a stressful situation. The doctor's willingness to "give him some time" rather than immediately recommending euthanasia in a traumatic case also showcases a compassionate and thoughtful approach to animal welfare, prioritizing recovery and a chance at a continued life for the pet.
However, it is important to note that customer experiences at Animal Care Center have been mixed, particularly concerning the handling of deceased pets and related services. While the medical care provided by Dr. Helms is highly praised, the administrative and post-care aspects have drawn some criticism. For instance, a customer reported a significant overcharge for cremation services compared to external providers, even discovering that the clinic used the same third-party crematorium but with a substantial markup. More critically, the method of returning a deceased pet to its owner—in a tied-up trash bag—was described as "disrespectful, inconsiderate, and just plain cruel." This aspect of their service, while perhaps not indicative of medical competence, deeply impacted a grieving family and raises concerns about the emotional sensitivity exercised during such a delicate time. The lack of direct communication from Dr. Helms when the pet was picked up further compounded this negative experience for some clients.
From a promotional standpoint, Animal Care Center's greatest strength lies in the positive experiences of those whose pets have received life-saving or highly effective medical interventions from Dr. Helms. Testimonials highlighting his diagnostic acumen, willingness to go the extra mile (like personal hospitalization), and direct communication serve as powerful endorsements. The clinic's ability to accommodate emergencies when other vets are unavailable also positions them as a crucial resource for urgent care. The "decently priced" services, as mentioned by one reviewer, also contribute to their appeal. However, the negative feedback regarding post-mortem care and cremation pricing presents a significant area for improvement and could deter potential clients who prioritize compassionate handling of their beloved pets throughout their entire life cycle, including their passing. For Animal Care Center to enhance its overall reputation and foster more widespread positive sentiment, addressing these concerns related to client experience, particularly during sensitive times, would be crucial. Despite these issues, the clinic remains a vital option for pet owners in Muskogee seeking a vet who is willing to take on challenging cases and offer personalized medical attention.

May 16, 2025 · Kennedy ColeI came to Dr. Helms by necessity, he was not my usual vet. My dog was ran over and my usual vets were apparently too busy to help me. I didn't even know that was a "thing" but apparently so. I started googling other vets and came upon him. I called and they told me to bring him right in. When this happened, I was absolutely sure the vet was going to tell me to put him down. However, Dr. Helms advised me to give him some time. I'm so glad he did. He was decently priced, caring and smart. And what he wasn't sure of he took the time to call other specialist to find out. He's definitely not in the business for money. Im so grateful for him. He's the only vet that has ever called me back personally when I had a question. I'm so thankful he advised me to give my dog some time to heal. It was extremely traumatic and really rough for a while but my dog is now back to being happy and adapting to his new life. His staff is amazing, also. I will use this vet as long as he's in practice from this point forward.

Jul 18, 2024 · Julie KeifriderThey were great! Prices were reasonable but since everything is priced separately it did add up quickly. They also were able to cut his nails for $20 but for that price I was expecting a bit more but I was very thankful they were able to cut them at all. Overall great experience and we will be back!!

Sep 21, 2023 · Kaylee CrossSuper nice vet and receptionist. They were the only ones in town who would look at my bearded dragons tail when it was injured. Got him in immediately and were very informative. Followed up with me the next week to make sure he was doing better
