We believe Dr. Jill Sackman is one of the best dog behaviorists in the country. Not only does she have behaviorist certification, but she has taught other veterinarians who are seeking certification. We had an initial meeting after our dog bit a toddler down the street (which was my fault) and caused three other dogs to bleed. We learned our dog suffered from anxiety and engaged in fear-based aggression. We learned both how to manage the issue and how to address his sensitivity through re-conditioning. If training your dog is really about training the humans, then my husband and I learned from Dr. Sackman all that we needed to become better dog handlers. She is great at listening, explaining, and breaking things down into simple steps. I recommend the follow up appointments, too! We had two or three follow up appointments with Dr. Sackman and they were worth every penny. Just knowing we'd be speaking with her in six months made me confident that I could get answers for management issues that I hadn't yet mastered. Finally, we live in California and used Dr. Sackman's services from her practice in Michigan virtually. The behaviorists in California were fully booked and we are so glad we found a virtual solution and chose her.

Our Specialized Behavior Consultation Services

At Animal Behavior Consultants of Michigan, our core offering revolves around identifying the underlying causes of problematic pet behaviors and developing tailored strategies for management and modification. Our services, primarily conducted through consultations, include:

  • Behavioral Assessments: Dr. Sackman conducts thorough assessments to understand the triggers, patterns, and motivations behind your pet's behavior. This initial meeting is crucial for formulating an effective plan. As one reviewer noted after their dog bit a toddler and other dogs, the consultation helped them understand their dog suffered from anxiety and fear-based aggression.
  • Development of Management Strategies: Based on the assessment, we provide you with practical strategies to manage your pet's behavior in everyday situations, ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone involved. This might include environmental modifications, safety protocols, and immediate steps to mitigate problem behaviors.
  • Behavior Modification Plans: We develop customized re-conditioning programs to address the root causes of your pet's behavioral issues. These plans often involve gradual exposure, counter-conditioning, and other positive reinforcement techniques to change your pet's emotional responses and behaviors over time.
  • Follow-Up Appointments: As recommended by a satisfied client, follow-up appointments are invaluable for tracking progress, addressing new challenges, and refining the behavior modification plan. These sessions provide ongoing support and ensure you have access to expert advice as you work with your pet.
  • Virtual Consultations: Recognizing the need for accessible expertise, we offer virtual consultations, allowing pet owners outside of Michigan to benefit from Dr. Sackman's knowledge and guidance. This is particularly helpful for those in areas where specialized behaviorists are unavailable or fully booked.
  • Medication Management (if necessary): In some cases, as with the cat Rue who was adjusting to indoor life and other cats, Dr. Sackman may recommend anti-anxiety medication as part of a comprehensive behavior modification plan to help take "the edge off" while the pet settles and learns new behaviors.

Dr. Sackman has been such a great help to me and my cat Rue in getting her adjusted to life indoors (which Rue really loves) and living with another cat (which Rue really did NOT love). Rue had some failed adoptions before me, but we knew she was very sweet under all the spiciness and just needed some time and help to learn how to get along with others. Dr. Sackman got her some anti-anxiety meds to take the edge off while she settled, sent me resources on how to leash-train Rue to burn off all the extra energy (Rue LOVES hiking on her leash!), and gave me excellent tools for slow, healthy introductions between cats. Rue has now adopted a stray kitten I was fostering, and loves to play, groom, and nap with her new best friend; something I never would have thought possible when I first adopted her. Dr. Sackman helped me get my girl from "ghost pepper spicy" to "cinnamon-sugar sweet" and I'm so thankful! Not a lot of people know there are options for cat behaviorists and either choose to live with the challenging behaviors, or they give up on their cat, but Dr. Sackman offered another option! I loved that she's been upfront with me from the beginning about what my expectations should be, and how long it could take. It was so worth it. Don't wait for a behavior to get worse--call as soon as you see something so everyone can live more comfortably! Here's a picture of Rue (all white) snuggling her new bestie, Tupelo.

Animal Behavior Consultants of Michigan and Dr. Sackman were extremely helpful in helping me learn why my dog has bitten 2 people, and how to help prevent it in the future. I will say, before my first visit I had to prepay nearly $500, and I was planning on being very mad about that, but dispite these hard times, I left feeling it was money well spent. My only advice to them would be to join the CareCredit network, so that visits can be financed by struggling animal lovers like myself.

Dr Sackman is CARING, FRIENDLY KNOWLEDGEABLE and PROFESSIONAL I was referred to her practice by our Veterinarian after adopting our rescue, Opie. She quickly diagnosed him and prescribed medication to help settle him down mentally She also has an AMAZING Licensed Vet Tech named Lauren to assist her who just happens to be a Certified Professional Dog Trainer The perfect blend to come up with a detailed plan to help us manage Opie and his fears Lauren came to our home to do an assessment and formulated a specific plan to help us train Opie That was 4 years ago and I can truly say that I couldn’t have done it without their continued support and care!!! I would recommend them to my family and friends with NO hesitation Thank you Dr Sackman and Lauren for your time and dedication to help those of us who need assistance!!!!

Dr. Sackman is wonderful! It’s obvious how much she cares about the animals that she works with, as well as their owners. She’s made such a difference in our anxious dog’s life - our dog has made so much progress, much more than we ever imagined would be possible. We can’t say enough about how skilled and kind Dr. Sackman is!
