Thank you, thank you, Alta Vet! Somewhere in the night my car got caught by something and the tip of his tail had no fur on it. Degloved is the term, it’s an issue. I got an appt at the closest vet it was a few days out. They saw him and recommended surgery and partial tail amputation estimate was $1000 to $1100, plus the current office visit of $97. (Total $1100 to $1200 bucks) I did go home and call around to other vets to see abt an estimate. I ended up calling four other places between Holiday, Murray and West Jordan. No other place would give an estimate without seeing the cat. I called Alta Vet, I got an estimate (with full disclosure they don’t know until they actually see the cat.) The gal who answered the phone actually knew and was familiar with animals. The office visit was as less than the other five vets I’d called around to. It’s a smaller vet hospital with two exam rooms. Dr. L has a good ‘ol boy vibe, friendly but practical. He asked me questions about my cat, his habits explained the risks of surgery and gave me two options. We tried option A. Yes, the cost was less but for Option B, the tail amputation the overall surgery would have been $300 dollars less, then the first vet. Option A is working out just fine, the cat is happily doing whatever he likes. Alta vet called to check up on us a few days later. They give just what you think you should get from a vet, knowledgeable staff, and care for your animal. I will call them first next time!

Doberman owners beware!! Do not trust this vet! I hate to post this as I had such a wonderful experience treating my dog with Alta Vet until I had an appt with Alfred LiVecchi. I took my dog (who happens to be my federally protected service dog) in for some scabbing on his ear I thought could be melanoma. LiVecchi dismissed my concerns and said it was male pattern baldness. He listened to my Dobermans heart and then told me my boy had a heart murmur. For anyone that has owned a Doberman, that is not to be taken lightly as a murmur could be a start of DCM, which is notorious for killing Dobermans young. DCM also took the life of my previous Doberman. It was also odd to me that he’d say my dog had a murmur because I’m completely obsessive over my current Doberman and check his resting respiratory rate all the time. And constantly checking his heart in general, I know I’m no expert or doctor… But I’m passionate about my Dobermans. I was very concerned and wanted to have him scheduled for screening. From all my research I’ve done, being very passionate about Dobermans, I was under the impression that Holter monitors are done yearly to find arrhythmias that can be the start of DCM. Echocardiograms are done once there is evidence of abnormalities with the heart. And I voiced that. Said that the Salt Lake Doberman club, which I am a member of, had a Holter I could use. LiVecchi wanted to schedule an echocardiogram. I felt very dismissed and talked down to by him. I felt like because I am a young woman, certainly I can’t know anything. I agreed to the echocardiogram because I am willing to do anything for my dog to help ensure he has a long, healthy, happy life. I went to schedule with front desk. The front desk lady told me my dog would need to be at the vets office all day. And I told her, that is really not possible for me, as he is my service dog and I need him with me. I couldn’t imagine an echocardiogram taking all day. Also, I didn’t want to put any more stress on him if his heart was having issues, because he knows he has a job to do for me and I don’t want to stress him by separating him from his job. She told me it would be a couple hours so I was trying to understand why he’d need to be there all day. I said I could ask the Doberman club if they recommended anyone else to do it and she told me that’s how it is anywhere you go. Very rudely. She told me I would need someone there with me that day for my emotional state, which is ludicrous, that I’d have to ask someone to take work off to be there with me. And I could not wait in the waiting room while it was being done. It was very unprofessional and lacking empathy. I decided I’d just call them when I can figure out a time to do the echocardiogram. I had a weird feeling about it all so I decided to look for other vets that could do the echocardiogram. Which I am SO grateful I did. The first place I called said it would only take an hour to an hour and a half and they would happily accommodate me and let me wait in the waiting room. I took my dog into the other vets office and immediately after they examined him and did a focal test of his heart they did NOT FIND ANY MURMUR. And the other vet office said that an echocardiogram would not be necessary because they always start with Holter monitors to find arrhythmias first. And his results came back absolutely perfect. Nothing is wrong with his heart. I WILL NEVER TRUST ALTA VET HOSPITAL AGAIN. LiVecchi should be fired. Heart murmurs are not something that you diagnose by just listening to the heart with a stethoscope. And I can’t imagine if I would have let them do the echocardiogram, if they would have made up lies that his heart was failing to load him up on medications. Also, when I brought him in the front desk lady was pushing me to do more vaccines although he was totally not due for any. She should be fired too. Total scam to make profit.

My dog tore his dew claw and was in extreme pain. I called the veterinary hospital that I have been going to for 3 years and after explaining the situation to them, was told that they couldn't see him for 3 days. I called 2 other local vet hospitals and was given a similar response. I then called Alta Veterinary Hospital. I explained the situation and they opened up an appointment for my Luke that day. After an examination, the veterinarian said that he needed to have the dew claw removed/repaired and I was given a reasonable quote for the procedure. They were able to take care of the injury that day and when I picked him up later, he was well medicated and alert. They placed a nice little splint on his paw that he wasn't able to chew off but still afforded him the ability to get around. I admit that I was disheartened that the other facilities that I called were unwilling to fit him in just to assess the situation. Nonetheless, Dr. Kelly Huston and her staff were kind, compassionate, and knowledgeable and my puppy is now back to his normal self!
