Welcome to Agrodnia Marta D DVM

Dr. Marta D. Agrodnia, DVM, DACVS-SA (Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons - Small Animal), is a highly respected and experienced veterinary surgeon practicing at Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care (PVESC), located at 739 Warren Ave, Portland, ME 04103, USA. PVESC is a locally owned and operated multi-specialty referral hospital, distinguished as the only non-corporate facility of its kind in Maine. You can contact PVESC by phone at (207) 878-3121 or +1 207-878-3121.

Environment

Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care (PVESC) at 739 Warren Avenue serves as a critical hub for advanced animal medical care in Maine. The facility is designed to handle a high volume of complex cases, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year for emergency and critical care. While specific aesthetic details of the current Warren Avenue facility are not extensively described, it is understood to be a busy, specialized environment. Customer reviews indicate that the staff goes "above and beyond to make us feel comfortable," especially when leaving a pet overnight for surgery, suggesting a supportive and reassuring atmosphere despite the potentially stressful nature of emergency and specialty care. Dr. Agrodnia has noted that the Warren Avenue location, a 12,000-square-foot treatment center, has been outgrown by the practice, leading to plans for a significantly larger 42,000-square-foot facility in Falmouth, set to open in spring 2026. This expansion reflects the high demand for their specialized services and their commitment to providing cutting-edge care in a more spacious setting. The current environment is focused on efficiency and equipped to handle urgent and complex medical situations, while still prioritizing patient and client comfort.

Services

Dr. Marta D. Agrodnia, as the owner and a lead surgeon at PVESC, is integral to the wide array of specialized services offered. They do not perform general practice services such as vaccinations. Their comprehensive services include:

  • Emergency and Critical Care: Available 24/7/365, this department handles life-threatening injuries and severe health issues, providing immediate and expert care for pets in crisis. They are equipped to triage and stabilize critical patients.

  • Surgery: Dr. Agrodnia is a board-certified veterinary surgeon with extensive experience in soft tissue, orthopedic (including TPLO surgery for cruciate ligament repair, as noted in a customer review), and neurologic surgery. She has also completed additional training in oncologic surgery. The surgical department is equipped to handle a wide range of complex procedures, with a focus on advanced techniques.

  • Internal Medicine: Specialists in internal medicine diagnose and treat complex diseases affecting various organ systems, often managing chronic conditions.

  • Oncology: PVESC has multiple oncologists to address cancer in pets, utilizing cutting-edge diagnostic tools and treatment options to give animals the best possible quality of life. They offer both medical and surgical management of cancer.

  • Cardiology: Specialists diagnose and treat heart conditions in pets.

  • Neurology: They provide advanced diagnostics and treatment for neurological disorders.

  • Dermatology: PVESC has a separate office on outer Congress Street dedicated to dermatology, addressing various skin conditions.

  • Radioactive Iodine Therapy (I-131): This specialized treatment is offered for hyperthyroid cats.

  • Synovetin OA Therapy: This is a specific treatment option for canine osteoarthritis.

  • Advanced Diagnostics: As a referral center, PVESC utilizes sophisticated diagnostic techniques and equipment, including advanced imaging, and is often involved in research and clinical trials for new diagnostics. They receive referrals from general practice veterinarians throughout Maine and surrounding areas.

Features

PVESC and Dr. Marta D. Agrodnia are recognized for several distinguishing features:

  • Specialized Expertise: Dr. Agrodnia holds a DVM from Michigan State University and completed her surgical residency there, followed by additional training in oncologic surgery at Colorado State University. She has been practicing small animal veterinary surgery in Portland, ME, since 2008, and has exclusively done specialty and emergency work since 1997. This extensive background makes her a highly skilled and sought-after surgeon.

  • Team of Board-Certified Specialists: PVESC boasts a team of board-certified specialists across various disciplines (surgery, internal medicine, oncology, cardiology, neurology, dermatology, etc.), emergency veterinarians, veterinary technician specialists, licensed veterinary technicians, and client service representatives. This multi-specialty approach ensures comprehensive and integrated care for complex cases.

  • 24/7 Emergency Care: The continuous availability of emergency and critical care provides a crucial resource for pet owners in Maine, offering peace of mind that their pets can receive urgent treatment at any time.

  • Referral Center: PVESC serves as a referral hospital for general practice veterinarians, working in partnership with family vets to provide advanced diagnostics, sophisticated techniques, and treatment for challenging conditions that may be beyond the scope of a general clinic.

  • Compassionate and Client-Focused Approach: Despite being a high-volume, specialty center, customer reviews highlight the staff's kindness, attentiveness, and ability to make owners feel comfortable. Comments such as "excellent care and understood everything that was going on" and "friendly and kind as our pup was quite nervous" attest to their commitment to empathetic communication and patient comfort.

  • Locally Owned and Independent: As the only non-corporate multi-specialty referral hospital in Maine, PVESC offers a unique local presence in a field increasingly dominated by corporate entities. This ownership structure may contribute to a more personalized approach to patient care.

  • Commitment to Advancement: Dr. Agrodnia's interest in advancing veterinary medicine is evident in PVESC's involvement in beta-testing new diagnostic equipment and participation in research and clinical trials, pioneering new diagnostics and treatment options.

Thanks so much to Dr Agrodnia and staff for taking such wonderful care of Mizzen. We received excellent care and understood everything that was going on. The Dr. was friendly and kind as our pup was quite nervous. We really appreciate everything you have done. Definately will go there again if we need too and recommend to all.

Great doctors, but terrible service Dr. Agrodnia is a talented surgeon, and Dr. Mason a very knowledgeable oncologist, but the business itself is run very poorly and inefficiently. First, we had some confusion and delays on my dog's surgery day, and on his surgery discharge, he was sent home with poop all over his backside, which got all over the car. Ok, not a huge deal. But... a couple of days later when I was concerned about swelling and infection of the incision, I called them and waited for hours for a callback. Finally, I was told when I called again to take a picture of it and email it, which I did. Then I waited. I was told they would call. Two hours later, I happened to notice an email from them that said the pic was too blurry, so I sent another. And I waited. I finally decided on my own that it was ok, they never got back to me. Then, when we went back for his recheck, having spent well over $4000 at that point, we drove the 2 1/2 hours to get there, and sat in the parking lot (this is during the pandemic; I never even saw his surgeon), waiting to be seen for OVER AN HOUR on a blistering hot day! Apparently, the front desk misunderstood what we were being seen for or something, I dont know. But the parking lot was not at all busy or full. By then my dog was hot and stressed, not a great time to start chemo. The doctor apologized, but wth?! Oh, and their prices are insanely expensive!

The quality of care and service from both surgeons and staff was exemplary. When I called with a question, they responded in an adequate amount of time. Very personable and professional. I have nothing but high praise for these folks. Job well done . Thank you.
