Welcome to Acton Animal Hospital
Located at 363 Main St, Acton, MA 01720, USA, Acton Animal Hospital is a well-established "Pet Hospital" that has been serving the Acton community and surrounding areas since 1957. With a long history of providing veterinary care, it offers a comprehensive range of medical, surgical, and dental services for dogs, cats, and other small mammals. The hospital aims to combine quality medical care with a friendly, compassionate environment, emphasizing client education and open communication. Their phone number is (978) 263-7477 or +1 978-263-7477.
Acton Animal Hospital strives to provide a comfortable and welcoming environment for both pets and their owners. Clients often mention that the clinic is "easy to get to," with "plenty of parking," which contributes to a convenient visit. The staff is consistently described as "kind and gentle," even with pets that might be anxious about vet visits, like Dolly, who isn't "crazy about going to the vet." This indicates a conscious effort by the team to create a calming atmosphere and utilize gentle handling techniques. The overall impression from many long-term clients is of a "friendly, clean" clinic where pets receive "top-quality veterinary care" and "unparalleled service." The focus on making pets feel comfortable and reducing their stress during examinations and treatments is a key aspect of their environment. The hospital aims for a "small, friendly office environment" that fosters strong relationships between staff, clients, and pets.
Acton Animal Hospital is a full-service veterinary hospital, meaning they provide a wide array of medical care designed to support pets through every stage of life. Their comprehensive offerings include:
- Wellness and Preventive Care: This is a core focus, including annual wellness visits for most adult dogs and cats, and bi-annual (twice-yearly) visits for senior pets. These appointments include thorough physical examinations, individualized vaccination protocols (e.g., rabies, distemper, parvovirus for dogs; rabies, FVRCP, FeLV for cats), and personalized advice on nutrition and parasite prevention.
- Dental Care: They offer complete dentistry services, including full teeth cleanings under anesthesia and digital dental radiography (X-rays) to screen for hidden oral diseases, recognizing the critical link between oral health and overall well-being.
- Surgical Services: A full range of soft-tissue surgeries are performed, such as spays, neuters, and mass removals. These procedures are carried out with "state-of-the-art precision and care" by their experienced veterinarians.
- Internal Medicine: Their capabilities extend to in-depth workups and treatment for many complex internal health issues. This includes conditions like diabetes, Cushing's disease, hypothyroidism, heart disease, and kidney disease (common in cats).
- Pain Management: Utilizing advanced treatments like cold laser therapy, they provide relief and improve the quality of life for pets experiencing acute or chronic discomfort, such as arthritis.
- Advanced Diagnostics: Acton Animal Hospital is equipped with several key diagnostic tools for evaluating a pet's condition. This includes a full in-house laboratory for rapid results on tests like complete blood counts, blood chemistry, heartworm testing, urinalysis, fine-needle aspirates, and fecal testing. They also utilize digital X-ray and handheld point-of-care ultrasound technology for viewing internal organs, bones, joints, heart, and lungs. For more specialized needs, they can bring in a specialist to perform echocardiograms and comprehensive abdominal ultrasounds, and utilize commercial veterinary testing labs for in-depth diagnostics.
- Senior Pet Care: They offer attentive care specifically tailored to the unique challenges faced by senior pets, such as vision loss, weight gain, arthritis, hearing loss, and cognitive decline, aiming to maintain their comfort and quality of life.
- Emergency and Urgent Care: While primarily a general practice, they are equipped to handle urgent care needs during their regular office hours and can provide guidance on after-hours emergency resources.
Acton Animal Hospital is characterized by several features that contribute to its reputation, though client experiences can sometimes vary.
- Compassionate and Friendly Staff: A strong positive theme in client reviews is the kindness, gentleness, and genuine concern exhibited by all staff members, from receptionists to veterinary technicians and doctors. They are often described as "smart" and dedicated to their patients and worried pet owners. This focus on empathy is a significant comfort to clients.
- Client Education: The hospital places a strong emphasis on educating pet owners, ensuring they understand their pet's health conditions, treatment options, and preventive measures. This proactive approach helps pet parents become informed partners in their animal's care.
- Long-Standing Community Presence: Having served the area for over 65 years, Acton Animal Hospital has built deep roots and trust within the community, with many clients having brought multiple pets to the practice over the years.
- Modern Convenience: The hospital offers a mobile app (via PetDesk) which allows clients to easily book appointments, request prescription refills, and view their pet's records, enhancing convenience and communication.
- Experienced Veterinarians: The practice boasts a team of experienced veterinarians, including Dr. Daphne Flessas (owner), Dr. Betty Johnston, and Dr. Maria-Elena Cloherty, supported by a dedicated staff.
- AAHA Accreditation: Acton Animal Hospital is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). This voluntary accreditation signifies that the hospital meets rigorous standards in areas like facility, equipment, patient care, and continuing education, reflecting a commitment to high-quality veterinary medicine.
However, it is important to acknowledge that while many experiences are positive, some clients have reported concerns regarding diagnostic thoroughness. For instance, one review highlights a missed heart murmur during an initial exam prior to a dental procedure, leading to frustration and questions about the initial assessment. This suggests that while comprehensive services are offered, clients should always feel empowered to ask questions and seek clarification on diagnostic findings and treatment plans, especially for complex or unexpected conditions.
Acton Animal Hospital aims to make quality veterinary care accessible, providing various options to help manage healthcare costs. While specific promotional campaigns should be verified directly with the hospital, their general approach includes:
- Transparent Pricing: The hospital encourages clients to ask for an estimate before services are provided, promoting transparency in billing. They require payment in full at the time services are rendered and accept major credit cards (VISA, Mastercard, American Express) and cash.
- Pet Insurance: Like most modern veterinary practices, Acton Animal Hospital accepts pet insurance and encourages clients to consider it for unexpected accidents and illnesses. They can assist with documentation to facilitate reimbursement from pet insurance providers.
- Flexible Payment Solutions: To further assist clients with managing veterinary expenses, particularly for larger or unexpected bills, Acton Animal Hospital partners with third-party financing options such as CareCredit and Scratchpay. CareCredit offers flexible financing with promotional interest-free periods for eligible purchases, while Scratchpay provides simple, transparent payment plans with high approval rates and no prepayment penalties. They also accept the All Pet Card, which offers special financing for purchases over $250.
- Online Pharmacy and Home Delivery: They offer home delivery services for prescriptions and pet food, which can be a convenient option for clients.

Oct 28, 2024 · Deborah L. PollardNeeded to get my dogs teeth cleaned. Paid for an exam, told good to go. $1400-$2500 estimate, appt scheduled. Drop her off only to get a call 15min later that she has a loud heart murmer. How was that missed during exam??? My heart murmur required antibiotics for dental work but they offerred to proceed anyways! WHAT??? You suggest a cardiology exam but then want to go ahead and clean the teeth anyways??? No thanks! Clearly you don't have my dogs best interest AND the initial exam shouldve been refunded! 2 hours of my time, you insisted I paid when I scheduled appt. AND you missed a major issue that could be heart disease bc shes older and never had one.

Oct 04, 2024 · Suzanne JacobsonI'm so glad our neighbors referred us to Acton Animal Hospital. Everyone was very kind and attentive to our Howard, from scheduling, to the front desk, to the vet tech, the vet (Dr. McLeod). I've been to many vets where I've felt like they were pushing a lot of extra services and testing (which can be VERY expensive) and wares, but here they let me know what to watch, let me know what additional options were available, and really didn't lean on me to chose one or another. A delightful experience. Their PetDesk app is also pretty handy.
